Yaqut al-Hamawi's (d. 626 AH) *Mu'jam al-Buldan* (Dictionary of Countries) is considered one of the most important and comprehensive Arabic geographical dictionaries in the Arab-Islamic heritage, and one of the most accurate and original.
The dictionary contains 15,038 key geographical entries about the countries of the Islamic world, from the far reaches of Andalusia to the borders of China. We are pleased to present it to researchers in a scholarly edition befitting its high historical significance and the stature of its author. The edition takes into account the current state of the places, countries, and cities mentioned within it, identifying each location: whether it has disappeared or still exists; whether it is still known by its old name or has changed and become known by another name.
Its precise location today; and in which country it is situated, because the ancient definitions of places and countries are no longer suitable for our time.
